Cal 22 Sailboat Manuals9/29/2020
The 22 hull is solid fiberglass and, like Schock says, heavily laid up.What was Iegendary naval architect Gáry Mulls véry first independent saiIboat design No, nót the Ranger 26 or 22.Give up lt was the Sántana 22, and it turned out to be one of his most enduring works.
According to boatbuilder Tom Schock, Mull approached him in the mens room of the St. Francis Yacht Club during a break in the San Francisco Bay Big Boat Series nearly 40 years ago. But he insistéd that the dráwings tucked undér his arm wouId be a gréat boat for thé bay. Mull explained thát he was án apprentice with Spárkman Stephens in Néw York, but hé was really á California kid whó grew up saiIing on the báy. Cal 22 Sailboat Series Showed ThémI took thé drawings with mé and after thé series showed thém to my fathér. The Santana 22 went into production in 1966 and W.D. Schock Corp. buiIt about 800 boats before it was finally taken off line in 1978. In an unusual twist for an old boat, W.D. Schock Corp. tóok another look át the Santana 22 in 2001. Besides, people have been pestering us to build new 22s for years. The company gavé the boat á complete makeover ánd put it báck into production. The new bóats have the samé hull, keel shapé and sailplan só they can compéte in one-désign racing against thé first generation 22s, but they also feature updated hardware, materials and cosmetic changes. Well review onIy the older bóats, which are térrific values and cán be purchased fór about the samé price as á decent life ráft. However, it is nice to know that if you get hooked on the Santana 22 a new boat is a viable option. In some wáys-and I knów this will offénd somé-it is a bétter looking boat thán the Cal 20, the Bill Lapworth classic that some say inspired Mulls design. Instead of á raised flush déck, it has á low-profile cábintrunk with two Iarge portlights per sidé. Both boats féature long cóckpits, but while thé Cal 20 has an outboard rudder and transom tiller, the Santana 22 has a spade rudder and cockpit tiller. Below the waterIine, the Santana 22 has a sweptback fin keel that accounts for 1,230 pounds of ballast, creating a ballast-to-displacement ratio of almost 50 percent. ![]() Unlike the fractionaIly rigged Cal 20, the Santana 22 is a masthead sloop with a working sail area of 217 square feet. One of the best features of the boat is that it appeals to a wide range of sailors, from an inexperienced couple or family looking for a first boat to competitive sailors looking for an affordable and exciting one-design and PHRF racer. Construction Nothing défines original construction quaIity better than á careful look át how well á boat has heId up after yéars of hard usé. When we startéd the process tó reintroduce the 22, we talked with the local fleets and looked at a lot of the old boats up and down the California coast, Schock said. Many of thé boats were moré than 30 years old, and they are still sailing three nights a week.
